NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Behind two first-half goals, the Belmont University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 with an impressive road victory at the University of Memphis early Sunday evening. An 18th-minute penalty kick taken by redshirt junior forward
Brock Kiper and an inaugural goal by freshman forward
Jaxon Stokes in the 35th minute gave the Bruins (2-0-0) a commanding 2-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Â
The Tigers (0-1-1) committed a handball in the box on an
Oscar Hough corner kick and a
Riley Clothier header, leading to Kiper's PK. It was Belmont's lone corner of the half and one of only three for the Bruins in the match.
Stokes made his collegiate debut in the 29th minute and a little over six minutes later scored driving into the box from the left side. He fired a shot off his left foot after going one-on-one with his defender, sneaking the ball past Memphis' goalkeeper and into the net.
After facing just two shots in the first half, Belmont staved off 12 in the second period. Graduate goalkeeper
Grant Calvert came up with a trio of saves within the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a remarkable diving stop in the 51st minute.
Redshirt senior forward
Jimiyu Mark nearly put the Bruins up three scores in the 59th minute with a header that struck the crossbar.
At the 88th minute, freshman midfielder
Paul Claes Nielsen had a clear look on a counterattack, but his shot was saved at the last second by Tiger keeper Filip Sabatti.
Â
Five of Belmont's seven shots were on target, and the Bruins defended 11 corners, including six in the first half.
The win is only Belmont's second against Memphis and first since Sept. 21, 1997. The Bruins had lost all 10 previous matchups with the Tigers in Memphis.
