Men's Tennis Concludes Opening Weekend of Fall Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Wrapping up its first weekend of fall tournaments, the Belmont University men's tennis team earned a combined five match wins Sunday at the Louisville and MTSU Invitationals. The Bruins secured a doubles victory and a pair of singles wins in Louisville, Kentucky, while taking two matches off host Middle Tennessee in a hidden dual in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
 
The duo of sophomore Charlie Robin and graduate Will Ecklund topped the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Axel Frechet and Jake Anthony in doubles action at the Louisville Invitational as both senior Sabi Roi and Robin claimed straight-set wins in singles.
 
Closing out the MTSU Invitational against the Blue Raiders, Belmont got a 6-3 doubles win from senior Eli Mizerski and sophomore Morgan Woodson, before sophomore Esteban Ortiz cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory. Woodson nearly pulled out a three-set singles match in Sunday's hidden dual but fell in a third-set tiebreaker.

"Sabi and Stefan (Vedovelli) did well in singles this weekend," commented head coach Jeff Cero. "I was happy to see them show some progress from both last season and through their work over the summer. Overall, we experienced some growing pains and items we need to work on, which is why this weekend was good for us both in Louisville and at MTSU. We're excited to get back to work on ourselves as a team."
