Women's Tennis Completes Day Two of the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On the second day of the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational in the Music City, the Belmont University women's tennis team secured victories in three out of four doubles matches versus Eastern Kentucky after taking a pair of singles matches from Lipscomb. The Bruins began Saturday with a doubles win from sophomore Jessica Popiol and freshman Mia Jones against East Tennessee State University.
 
Popiol and Jones defeated the Buccaneers' Audelie Lesauvage and Ksenija Rage 7-5 in the morning's doubles session, before both Jones and senior Libbie Hamilton gutted out three-set triumphs against the Bisons in singles play.
 
Hamilton overcame dropping the opening set in a tiebreaker with a 6-2 second set and a 10-4 third-set super tiebreaker to get past Lipscomb's Leena Hamdan. Meanwhile, Jones outlasted the Bisons' Martina Bovio 14-12 in the decisive third-set super tiebreaker. All eight of Belmont's singles matches were played at the opposite end of Belmont Boulevard at Lipscomb's Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
 
In the afternoon's doubles session against the Colonels, redshirt freshman Savannah Webster teamed up with Popiol for a 6-4 win as the tandems of Jones and graduate Cielo Tapia-Cruz (6-3) and junior Emma Grant and freshman Annika Warkentin (6-4) were also victorious.
 
The Bruins wrap up the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational Sunday morning by taking on the Bisons in doubles at Lipscomb at 10 a.m. Belmont will then play Eastern Kentucky in singles at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex at 11 a.m.
