Women's Tennis Closes Out Opening Fall Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Wrapping up the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational in the Music City, the Belmont University women's tennis team took two out of three doubles matches from rival Lipscomb at the opposite end of Belmont Boulevard Sunday morning. Both doubles teams of graduate Cielo Tapia-Cruz and freshman Mia Jones and junior Hana Sokolovic and freshman Ketevan Jeladze were victorious against the Bisons, before Jeladze came away with a singles win versus Eastern Kentucky University in the final session of the opening fall weekend tournament.
 
At the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center at Lipscomb, Tapia-Cruz and Jones defeated the Bisons' Serafima Bobrovnikova and Kameliia Tytarenko, 6-4. Meanwhile, Sokolovic and Jeladze handled Lipscomb's Leena Hamdan and Sofiia Zhylchuk, 6-3.
 
In singles action at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex, sophomore Jessica Popiol nearly pulled out a three-set win against the Colonels' Ceylin Ipek but was edged 13-11 in a third-set super tiebreaker.
 
Jeladze secured a straight-set, 6-2, 6-3, win over Eastern Kentucky's Zhansaya Bakytzhan.

Belmont continues its fall tournament slate next weekend in Bloomington, Illinois, at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational, held Friday-Sunday, Sept. 26-28.
