Bruins Lose Nail-Biter to Evansville on Senior Day

Belmont Outshoot Evansville 21-7

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University women's soccer took a heartbreaking loss to Evansville 2-1 on Saturday at E.S. Rose Park.

Belmont started off hot but a foul gave Evansville a free kick that the Purple Aces placed into the box and scored to go up 1-0 in the second minute.

The Bruins settled in however, dominating possession for the majority of the first half following the early goal.

Belmont was able to find several scoring opportunities taking eight shots in the first half but were unable to convert and ended the half trailing 1-0.

The Bruins came out of the break with a fire of their own as Lillie Tabor chipped a corner kick up to Reagan Ross who nailed a header to tie the match up in the 48th minute, tying the match at 1-1 just three minutes into the second half.

Belmont looked to build off the goal, continuing to take shots and control possession.

Greta Genie looked unbeatable as the match went on saving any shot sent her way.

The Bruins continued to generate opportunities, serving up several set pieces throughout the second half.

Tragedy struck in the 67th minute as a Purple Aces shot was deflected off a Bruin hand in the box, giving Evansville a penalty kick. The Purple Aces were able to score off the penalty to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bruins would be given a similar opportunity as Evansville would commit a foul just outside the box giving Belmont a free kick that was unfortunately hit just over the crossbar.

As time began to expire the Bruins refused to go down without a fight taking three corner kicks in the last two minutes of play but were unable to tie the match before the final whistle blew.

The Bruins outshot Evansville 21 to 7 and took 10 corners.

The Bruins (2-6-4) return to action Thursday night against Illinois State. Match time is set for 6 p.m. CT from Adelaide Street Field. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
