CARBONDALE, Ill. - - Belmont University women's soccer took a hard loss to Illinois State 1-0 on the road on Thursday at Adelaide Street Field.
 
Rain created slick conditions ahead of the match that looked to affect play from both teams in from the opening whistle.

The Bruins adapted to the conditions early and applied continuous pressure in the attacking third, forcing the Red Birds to play on their heels over the course of the first half.

Belmont stood tall defensively throughout the majority of the first half including several beautiful saves from Greta Genie.

A Red Bird corner would lead to the first goal of the match as a header put Illinois State up 1-0 in the 40th minute even after the play was challenged.

The Bruins came out of the break strong in what quickly became a physical second half.

The second half became a tough battle as the rain continued to fall as Belmont looked for an equalizer.
 
Makira Churchill played an impressive second half making her presence felt all over the pitch.

Belmont gave themselves several scoring opportunities late into the match looking to quicken the pace of play battling mother nature as the rain continued to slow things down.

The Bruins were unable to convert on their final offensive attack as time expired and ultimately fell to Illinois State 1-0.

Genie made an impressive seven saves throughout the match keeping the Bruins within striking distance and Belmont outshot the Red Birds 15 to 14.

The Bruins (2-7-4) return to action Sunday afternoon against Drake. Match time is set for 12 p.m. CT from Mediacom Stadium. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
