DES MOINES, Iowa - - Belmont University women's soccer played a great match but ultimatly fell to Drake 1-0 on the road on Sunday at Mediacom Stadium.
 
The Bruins defense was tested throughout the first half  but a few blocked shots and  masterful play from Belmont's back line kept the match scoreless.

Laken Whittington made her presence felt on both sides of the pitch throughout the first half. She did a phenomenal job stepping up defensively, making a couple steals, while also leading several counter attacks. 

The Bulldogs seemed to strike first after a free kick but after a VAR review, offsides was called and the goal was erased as the match remained 0-0.

A hand ball late in the first half would give Drake a penalty kick that was scored to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 39th minute.

The Bruins controlled possession following the goal, not leaving the attacking third for the remainder of the first half but would enter the break down 1-0.

Belmont looked to build off their momentum from the end of the first half putting pressure on the Bulldogs right from the opening whistle.
 
The Bruins had a great opportunity to score after a beautiful cross from Makira Churchill but it was grabbed out of the air before the Bruins could get a shot off.

The Bruins offense continued to knock on the door throughout the second half looking for an equalizer.

Defensively, Belmont continued to excel against Drake's offense, shutting them down time and time again.

The Bruins were unable to notch an equalizer as time expired and the Bruins fell 1-0.

The Bruins (2-8-4) return to action Saturday at home against Valparaiso. Match time is set for 2 p.m. CT from E.S. Rose Park. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the ESPN app.
