NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University volleyball team (7-8, 4-0 MVC) remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday evening, sweeping the Evansville Aces, 3-0, inside the Curb Event Center. The Bruins have now won 12 consecutive sets and earned their second home sweep of the season.Â
Belmont vs. Evansville (W, 3-1)
The Bruins and Aces traded runs throughout the opening set, battling to a 7-7 tie before Belmont began to create separation. An overpass kill from Alivia Keegan gave the Bruins an 11-10 advantage, followed by a huge swing from Sydnee Nelson and a kill in the middle from Erin McMullen to extend Belmont's lead to five. Madison Lansdown added an ace as Belmont became the first team to reach 20 points, while Brenna Kauffeld followed with another service ace to put the Bruins ahead 22-17. Evansville attempted a late comeback, but Belmont held on to take the opening set, 25-22. Lucy Kay led the Bruins with five kills in the frame.Â
Belmont carried its momentum into the second set, with Nelson opening the frame with an ace and the Bruins building an early 4-1 lead. Strong defensive touches from Mya Bolton helped Belmont maintain control as Evansville committed several errors. Kay added a kill from the middle before recording a solo block, while Nelson took over offensively with four consecutive kills to push the Bruins ahead 16-6. Belmont continued to control the set, with strong net play from McMullen helping the Bruins maintain their advantage. Kay delivered another big middle kill as Belmont closed out the set, 25-12.Â
The Bruins opened the third set with a kill from Kauffeld before Kay answered with a solo block and another kill. Belmont steadily built its lead, reaching a 16-8 advantage after a Kauffeld kill that sparked the Bruins' momentum. Kay added another kill to make it 19-12, while strong defensive touches from Bolton, Lauren Evans and Jordan Czajkowski kept the Aces from mounting a comeback. Nelson delivered another ace to push Belmont ahead 23-15 before Kauffeld finished the match with her eigth kill, giving the Bruins a 25-17 third-set victory and the 3-0 sweep.Â
