NORMAL, Ill. – With a strong performance in singles matches Saturday at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational, the Belmont University women's tennis team will play in five finals Sunday in Normal, Illinois. The Bruins clinched finals spots in the third doubles flight, the second singles flight and singles flights 4-6 with day two match victories.
In total, Belmont went 6-1 in singles play Saturday as the tandem of sophomore
Mia Jones and graduate
Isabel Pacheco topped Murray State's Molly Null and Rebecca Widan 8-2 in the third doubles flight semifinals. Jones and Pacheco will take on the University of Illinois Chicago's Charlotte Deletioglu and Marta Halbersztadt in Sunday's final for the No. 3 doubles crown.
Most dominant in Saturday's semifinal play was junior
Savannah Webster, who gave up only one game in a convincing 6-1, 6-0 triumph over UIC's Dongkey Liu in the second singles flight. On Sunday, Webster will face the Racers' Varvara Alexeyeva for the No. 2 singles title.
In the fourth singles flight semifinals, Jones blanked Valparaiso's Jolene Fernandes 6-0 in a deciding third set to reach the finals where she will take on Murray State's Aada Inna.
Pacheco saw her opponent retire due to injury following only three games in the fifth singles flight semifinals. On Sunday, Pacheco will take on the Flames' Kristina Tai in the No. 5 singles final.
Sophomore
Ketevan Jeladze got past Valparaiso's Cathy Beckmann 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the sixth singles flight semifinals to advance to the finals, where she will see UIC's Deletioglu.
Sophomore
Emmi Kolyszko and junior
Jessica Popiol also won consolation singles matches Saturday. In the top singles flight, Kolyszko defeated the Beacons' Lacey Tanner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile, Popiol prevailed in a third-set super tiebreaker (10-7) against Valparaiso's Brynn Steven after dropping the first set, 6-2.
