Baseball Drops First Game Against Bradley

Resilient Effort in Fifth Inning Not Enough to Secure Win

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In a game defined by momentum swings and relentless offense, Belmont mounted multiple comebacks but ultimately dropped a 13-8 decision to Bradley in the series opener Friday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.

Belmont displayed grit throughout, answering adversity on several occasions, but Bradley's timely hitting and late-inning execution proved to be the difference in a contest that featured 21 combined runs and 25 total hits.

The Bruins came out with intent early, manufacturing traffic in the first inning before breaking through in the second. Mike Sprockett worked a leadoff walk, and Jake Maddox followed with a single to set the table. Nate Webb drew another walk to load the bases, bringing up Michael Lareau, who delivered in the clutch with a two-run single to center field. The early strike gave Belmont a 2-0 advantage and immediate energy in the dugout.

That energy quickly flipped in the top of the third inning in what became the most damaging stretch of the game. Bradley capitalized on a mix of free passes and timely hits, stringing together six hits and a walk to produce a seven-run inning. Key RBI knocks from Luke Skinner, Landon Lowe, Hayden Miller, and Jaxon Schumacher, along with aggressive baserunning, including a steal of home, turned Belmont's early lead into a 7-2 deficit before the Bruins could regroup.

After a quiet third and fourth inning offensively, Belmont began to chip away and then delivered its most complete inning in the fifth. Landon Godsey sparked the rally with a walk and advanced into scoring position. Cavan McMeans followed with a single, and Sprockett drew another walk to load the bases once again. Maddox and Webb each showed patience at the plate, drawing consecutive bases-loaded walks to cut the deficit to 7-4. Lareau added an RBI groundout to make it 7-5 before Gardner Lawrence stepped in as a pinch hitter and delivered arguably Belmont's biggest hit of the day, a two-run double to center that tied the game at 7-7 and completely shifted the momentum back to the home side.

With the crowd back into the game, Belmont continued to battle. After Bradley scratched across a run in the sixth inning to retake the lead, Brady Holbrook answered immediately in the bottom half with a solo home run, evening the score at 8-8 and reinforcing the Bruins' resilience.

The pivotal moment came in the top of the seventh inning with the game deadlocked at 8-8. Bradley once again delivered in a key spot, as Hayden Miller lined an RBI double to score the go-ahead run. While the deficit was just one, the swing halted Belmont's momentum following the Holbrook home run and shifted control back to Bradley for good.

Belmont had opportunities to respond but couldn't capitalize, leaving runners on base in the seventh. Bradley then created separation in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a Belmont error and stringing together multiple hits to plate four runs. The inning extended the lead to 13-8 and effectively put the game out of reach.

Offensively, Belmont showed depth despite the loss. Cavan McMeans led the way with three hits, consistently putting pressure on Bradley's defense. Michael Lareau finished with three RBIs, including the early two-run single that opened the scoring. Gardner Lawrence's pinch-hit double provided a key spark, while Brady Holbrook added a home run in the sixth inning. The Bruins also demonstrated plate discipline, drawing nine walks on the day.

On the mound, Belmont starter Shane Duke ran into trouble in the third inning, while Sam Heyman provided stability through the middle frames before being tagged with the loss. Tate Marland and Owen Marsh combined to finish the game, but Bradley's offense continued to find timely hits late.
