CLEVELAND – Three Belmont University men's tennis players advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the 2026 Horizon League Individual Championships in Cleveland Friday. On the opening day of fall tournament play for the Bruins, juniors
Charlie Robin and
Morgan Woodson and freshman Jesús Garcia Salgado each won their first two rounds of singles indoors at Cleveland State's Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
Robin was most impressive in his first two rounds, dropping just 10 combined games across four sets. The Huntsville, Alabama, native downed Youngstown State's Phopthum Sriwong 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 32 before taking out Oral Roberts' Romain Azais 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Woodson handled Southern Indiana's Eduardo Trovo Vieira da Silva 7-5, 6-4 in the first round before defeating Youngstown State's Lenn Stueckrath in three sets (7-5, 3-6, 6-1) in the second round.
Like Robin, Salgado won both of his first two rounds in straight sets. The Monterrey, Mexico, native topped Southern Indiana's Simon Johnson 6-4, 6-4 before taking care of Youngstown State's Rafael Le Fur 6-3, 6-2.
"Charlie (Robin) did a solid job in singles from beginning to end and put himself in a position to be fresh heading into Saturday," commented head coach
Jeff Cero. "Most of the guys had some nervousness early with it being their first tournament of the year but really found their stride in the second round, especially Jesús (Garcia Salgado) and Morgan (Woodson)."
Saturday morning, Robin will face Cleveland State's Emil Dapcevic in the quarterfinals, while Woodson will take on top-seeded Constantin Radu of Northern Illinois. In Robin's same side of the bracket, Salgado will go up against Cleveland State's Tristan Stine in his quarterfinal match.
Junior
Kostiantyn Mantach also won his opening round match, conceding just two games in a dominant 6-2, 6-0 performance versus Southern Indiana's Kalani Hibbert.
Both Woodson and Mantach and Salgado and Robin will play consolation doubles matches Saturday afternoon after falling in the first round of doubles Friday.
