LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - It took
all nine innings, but Belmont baseball was able to come back from a
0-4 deficit in late innings to defeat in the series finale with
Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday afternoon, 6-4.
Junior Derek Hamblen, who
his career-long current hitting streak to 21 games, and sophomore
Dylan Craig
combined for five hits and were responsible for driving in all of
Belmont's six runs scored in the last two innings.
Down 0-4 going into the eighth
inning Hamblen hit a two-run homerun to put the Bruins within two
at 2-4.
That laid the ground work for
a big ninth inning which culminated in Craig's base-clearing
three-run double which gave Belmont a 5-4 lead. In the next at bat
Hamblen registered his third hit of the game to drive Craig home on
a chopping single through the left side.
Jon Ivie (3-1) capped
off a three inning, two hit scoreless appearance on the mound to
shut the door and the Trojans in the ninth inning.
"It's a credit to our kids
that they stayed in the game and were able to fight back for the
win," Head Coach David Jarvis said.
"We didn't play well in the first half of this ball game. Our
pitchers were able to keep us in the game enough for that late
inning comeback and five hits and all six RBI from Craig and
Hamblen was crucial. It's a good come-from-behind win, no
doubt."
Belmont (17-17) salvages the
three-game non-conference series and snapped a four-game losing
streak.
Despite the loss, UALR (20-14)
starter Calvin Drinnen lasted eight innings allowed just two runs
and struck out six. JR Boiling (2-2) gave up what proved to be the
game-winning run.
The Bruins end a string of
nine-straight road games at Tennessee Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
