Hamblen Continues Streak but Bruins Lose at TTU

April 13, 2010

Box Score

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Despite a 3-15 setback loss at Tennessee Tech Tuesday night at Bush Stadium, junior Derek Hamblen was able to extend his career-long hitting streak to 22 games.

The junior from Plano, Texas didn't waste any time in doing so, hitting a double in the first inning from the second spot in the lineup. Hamblen, who currently holds one of the longest hitting streaks in the nation, finished 1-for-5.

In his first at bat since being sidelined with injury at Kennesaw State on April 2, senior Packy Elkins hit a solo homerun to lead off the third inning. It was Elkins' eighth homerun of the season and the first run of the night for Belmont. Hitting leadoff for 26 games this season, Elkins bat from the ninth spot in the lineup and reached base in each at bat with two walks and a fielder's choice.

Despite the high notes for the Bruins, it was the Golden Eagles' day at the plate as Chad Oberacker finished 4-for-5 with two RBI. Tech recorded 15 hits and 15 runs to take the two-game season series from the Bruins. AJ Kirby Jones went 1-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Belmont finished with seven hits and left 12 runners on base, which ties a season-high. Tim Egerton was the Bruins' lone multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Freshman Josh Davis (1-2) made his third start of the season, lasting three innings after allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Matthew Shepherd (1-0) earned his first decision of the season after pitching six innings with three runs and seven strikeouts.

Tuesday's numbers were eerily similar to the first time the teams met on March 23 this season. Tech won 15-5 with 18 hits to dismantle Belmont at Shelby Park as Kirby-Jones four hits and six RBI and Oberacker had three hits. Another Belmont hot-hitter, Dylan Craig, extended what turned out to be a 17-game hitting streak against the Golden Eagles that day.

The Bruins end nine straight road games with a return to Nashville on Friday for a crucial conference matchup with Stetson beginning at 3 p.m. at Shelby Park.
