KENNESAW, Ga. - Junior Nate Woods had
one of the most prolific offensive performances in Belmont history
during a doubleheader split with Kennesaw State on Friday evening
at Stillwell Stadium. Woods finished with four homeruns, five hits
and 10 RBI as Belmont lost game one, 8-7, and won game two,
15-9.
Starting game one with a 0-5
deficit, Belmont took strides to regain the lead as six of its
seven unanswered runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. Woods
led the charge with two-run homeruns in back-to-back innings, the
ladder giving Belmont a 6-5 lead in the fifth. Woods finished
3-for-5 with four runs batted in during the first game.
Freshman lefty Chase Brookshire
pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed five early runs, but held the
Owls scoreless for four innings to enable the Bruins to come back
and eventually take a 7-5 lead in the seventh.
Kennesaw State answered with
two runs in the eighth inning to knot the game at seven, followed
by hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth from Josh
Whitaker.
Matt Hamann (3-1)
pitched one inning of relief to receive his first loss of the
season, while J.B. Johnson (4-0) held the Bruins for one inning to
receive the win. With its game one win, Kennesaw State took the
three-game series and leads the all-time series with Belmont,
10-5.
After losing the first two
games of the series, the Bruins used an offensive onslaught to
brush off the cobwebs of a four-game losing streak and jump out to
a 5-0 lead in the first inning of a 15-9 game two victory. A string
of five singles gave the Bruins the early lead as junior Tim Egerton's base
hit drove in the first two runs of the game, followed by another
two-run single by senior captain Mark Noth.
The runs continued to pour in
for the Bruins as Woods' third homerun of the day was a three-run
shot to left field which gave Belmont an 8-0 advantage in the
second inning.
Sophomore Frank Adelman made
his fifth start of the season on the mound and needed just one more
out to receive the win, exiting in the fifth inning with two outs.
The Owls came back to within three runs at 5-8 on two runs in the
fifth.
Belmont reached 15 runs for
the third time this season with seven runs in the sixth innings.
Breen led off the inning with his first triple as the Bruins hit
for the cycle with two homeruns, two doubles, and three singles to
take a 15-5 lead. Woods and Egerton accounted for the two
homeruns.
Matt Hamann (4-1)
entered the game in the fifth and pitch 1 1/3 innings with one
strikeout to receive the win. Jon Ivie (7) pitched the
next three innings with two strikeouts to receive his
league-leading seventh save of the season.
Six Bruins had multi-hit
performances in game two. Egerton went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Bryan Blough (1-3) started the game for the Owls, giving up seven
runs on five hits to receive the loss.
The Bruins return to action on
Tuesday, April 6 in a short trip to Vanderbilt beginning at 6 p.m.
