KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont
baseball lost its fifth straight game on Tuesday night, falling to
Tennessee 13-5 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Vols got off to a quick
3-0 lead in the first two innings after a 30-minute rain delay. But
senior Packy
Elkins responded for the Bruins with his second homerun in as
many games to put the Bruins within one at 3-2 in the fourth
inning. Junior Nate Woods preceded
Elkins' 12th homerun of the year with a two-out double to left
field.
The Raleigh, N.C., native
finished 2-for-2 and added one walk as Belmont's lone multi-hit
performance.
Elkins' two-run shot would be
as close as Belmont got for the rest of the night. Tennessee
matched Belmont's two runs in the fourth as all five base runners
in the inning reached on a hit-by-pitch or bases on
balls.
Vinny Casha led off
the fifth inning by drawing a walk and eventually scored on a
RBI-single from Dylan Craig to make
the score 5-3 in favor of the Vols.
UT scored three runs in the
sixth and four runs in the seventh to pull away in the eighth
meeting between the Tennessee schools.
Belmont mustered up a brief
comeback in the ninth inning, loading the bases on an error, walk
and a single, which yielded two unearned runs. Casha drove in the
first on a groundout to first base, and freshman Adam Cellini drove
in his second run of his young career with a groundout to third
just before the final out.
The Vols' Blake Forsythe
finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI. Josh
Liles went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Steven Gruver (2-3)
started for the Vols and pitched five innings with two strikeouts
and three walks to earn the win.
Sophomore Garrett Fanchier
(1-2) made his third start of the season and pitched 3 2/3 innings
with two strikeouts and four earned runs to receive the loss.
Junior Tim
Egerton pitched the last 1 2/3 innings for the Bruins with a
game-high three strikeouts on no walks and allowing no earned
runs.
Tennessee (22-20) improves its
series advantage over the Bruins 5-3.
Belmont (19-24) will look to
gain its first win in six games as Austin Peay comes to Nashville
on Wednesday - a rematch of last week's high-scoring 14-17 loss in
Clarksville. The non-conference game will be the first and only
night game played at Shelby Park this season, beginning at 5
p.m.
