NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Led by four
Tyler
Graskewicz scoreless innings Belmont baseball snapped a
five-game losing streak against Austin Peay on Wednesday night at
Shelby Park, 7-4.
A 5-3 Belmont lead after the
first inning was shades of last week's high-scoring 17-14 loss to
APSU in Clarksville, but both pitching staffs bucked down in the
last eight innings to allow a combined three runs the rest of the
game.
Graskewicz (1-2) made his
second start of the season, coming into the game with a 12.08 ERA
over 12 2/3 innings. But with four scoreless innings out of five
with three strikeouts and one walk, he showed his high potential on
the mound in his longest outing of the season.
"It's good to have Tyler pitch
the way he is capable of tonight," Head Coach David Jarvis said.
"When he pitches well we are a better team and he proved that
tonight."
After Austin Peay began the
game with a three-run first inning, the Bruins batted through the
order and posted five runs in the bottom half to take what turned
out to be a game-winning lead. Junior Nate Woods drove in
two runs in the first with a double down the left field line to
increase his season RBI total 63, which ranks top-10 in NCAA
Division I.
In the second inning
Graskewicz retired the Governors in order to set the tone for his
four scoreless innings and just two hits for the rest of his
appearance. Freshman Josh Davis and
sophomore Matt
Hamann pitched a combined three scoreless innings in relief and
only gave up one hit.
APSU's Chuck Edlin (0-1) gave
up five runs in the first inning to receive the loss in his first
start of the season.
The Bruins provided a valuable
unearned insurance run in the eighth inning to go up 7-3. APSU's
Matt Marsh threw two strikeouts in the inning but gave up a walk to
Mark Noth and
advanced him to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Noth then
scored from third on a passed ball.
Junior Jon Ivie closed out the
game with two straight strikeouts, but not before allowing a
leadoff walk to score and giving up a double to make the score
7-4.
Belmont (20-24) and Austin
Peay (22-19) split the season series one game each.
The Bruins return to
conference play on Saturday, hosting North Florida at Shelby Park
in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
