April 9, 2010

Box Score

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Junior Derek Hamblen extended his career-long hitting streak to 19 games in Belmont's 2-13 series-opening loss to with Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday night at Gary Hogan Field.

Hamblen extended his best hitting streak as a Bruins with a single in the seventh inning, his last at bat of the game. The Plano, Texas native holds the longest hitting streak on the team this season after finishing 1-for-4 at the plate.

Freshman Jared Breen tied his season-high for runs batted in with two on Friday night, going 1-for-3. After starting the season hit-less in the first six games, Breen seems to be adjusted to the rigors on Division I pitching as shown by his current five-game hitting streak and improving his batting average by 50 points in the last nine games to .202.

Junior catcher Matt Zeblo had his ninth multi-hit game of the season after registering two hits against the Trojans.

But on Friday night the UALR offense out-dueled Belmont with 16 hits, 13 runs and forced five Belmont errors.

Juco transfer Jason Houston hit two homeruns as the Trojans scored seven runs in three innings. Houston, who leads the team in homeruns, drove in two unearned runs in the third inning and followed with a solo long-ball in the fifth.

Six Trojans finished with multiple hits, led catcher Landis Wilson's 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.

Junior righty Nate Woods (2-4) took the mound for the Bruins in his eight start of the season which began with two briskly-paced scoreless innings. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa native allowed one earned run through four but a four-run fifth inning led to his four loss in five starts. Woods exited after five innings with four earned runs and three strikeouts.

UALR ace Adam Champion (4-2) lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and striking out three for the win.

Belmont's rally effort in the late innings came up short, leaving two runners on base in the sixth and three in the seventh to yield just one run. Belmont left a total eight runners on base.

Belmont (16-16) evens to .500 and 2-9 in road games, as UALR of the Sun Belt Conference improves to 19-13 with 16 of those wins coming at Gary Hogan Field.

The Bruins and Trojans continue a three-game non-conference series tomorrow at 4 p.m.
