MARTIN, Tenn. - Behind two
homeruns from senior Packy Elkins and
junior Derek
Hamblen's record-setting performance Belmont baseball defeated
Tennessee-Martin 16-6 on Wednesday night at Skyhawk
Field.
Elkins had a banner day at the
plate finishing 4-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. The
Raleigh, N.C., native tied a career-high in hits, runs batted in,
and runs scored. Elkins gave the Bruins the first of many homeruns
on the night by taking an 0-2 pitch past the right-center field
wall for two runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Elkins
followed up with his second homerun of the day to cap off a six-run
inning which gave Belmont an 8-3 lead.
Hamblen represented one of
Belmont's four homeruns with a three-run blast in the second
inning. But it was the first inning the Plano, Texas native hit his
22nd double of the season to become Belmont's single-season doubles
leader. Hamblen passed Ben Petsch's 21 doubles hit in the 2006
season.
As a team the Bruins tied a
season-high of four homeruns against the Skyhawks, the last
occurring on April 17 against Stetson. Dylan Craig finished
2-for-6 with two runs scored and hit first homerun since mid-March
against Lipscomb.
With 16 runs on Wednesday
night, paired with 15 runs to defeat North Florida in the tail end
of a doubleheader last Monday, the Bruins scored 15 or more runs in
back-to-back for the first time since 2002. In the program's first
year in the Atlantic Sun the Bruins scored 17 and 18 runs to help
sweep Morris Brown on Feb. 15 and 16.
Belmont used seven pitchers as
sophomore Garrett Fanchier
(1-1) got the win after three scoreless innings with just one hit.
UT Martin's Swaringen (0-5) allowed eight run in 1 2/3 innings to
receive the loss. Between the teams, there were a total of nine
strikeouts and seven homeruns.
