NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the last
home game of the season, Tennessee-Martin snapped Belmont's
seven-game winning streak by prevailing, 16-9, in a Tuesday
afternoon non-conference matchup at Dugan Field
Left-handed pitcher Brandon Frensley
made his first appearance on the mound since undergoing surgery
last year to repair his ulnar collateral ligament - commonly known
as Tommy John surgery. The redshirt sophomore from Hendersonville,
Tenn., started the game and went five innings - three hitless -
with two strikeouts in the no-decision.
The Bruins gave Frensley early
run support after starting with a 4-0 lead in the first three
innings behind two homeruns. Junior designated hitter Matt Zeblo had a solo
shot in the second inning, followed by a three-run homerun from
junior Tim
Egerton in the third.
Frensley departed after the
fifth inning with a 5-3 lead, but not before the Skyhawks hit
back-to-back homeruns to come within two.
UT Martin followed with seven
unearned runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-5 lead against
Belmont right-handed pitcher Dane Swinehart
(1-4) and lefty Frank Adelman. All
runs came with two outs and all runs were unearned after Matt Young
reached on an error by third baseman Derek Hamblen which
would have ended the inning.
The Skyhawks piled on six more
runs in the ninth inning for a 16-6 advantage. Junior closer and
conference saves leader Jon Ivie
uncharacteristically gave up all six runs in the ninth to inflate
his ERA from 2.45 to 4.01.
Belmont used five pinch
hitters in the bottom of the ninth - including freshman Josh Davis' two-run
double - to put up three runs for a final score of 16-9.
Belmont (26-25) and UT Martin
(24-28) split the two-game season series after the Bruins took a
16-6 decision last Wednesday in Martin, Tenn.
Making his seventh start at
second base, Egerton went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs
batted in, including his sixth homerun of the season. Catcher Vinny Casha tied
a career-high of three hits for the third time with one
RBI.
UT Martin third baseman Trey
Karlen went 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Belmont will travel to Mercer
In the last conference series of the season beginning on Thursday
at 6 p.m. ET. In order to ensure a spot in the Atlantic Sun
Tournament the Bruins will need least two wins in the three-game
series.
