Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University volleyball won its third consecutive match Saturday, defeating Tennessee Tech, 25-14, 25-17, 25-23.
Still energized from its straight sets' victory over Jacksonville State hours earlier, Belmont stormed out of the gates in set one. Belmont got two kills from junior Jen Myer (New Braunfels, Texas) and four attack errors from the visiting Golden Eagles en route to an 18-9 lead.
Two kills from freshman Jocelyn Youngdahl (Stillwater, Minn.) helped the Bruins close set one, 25-14.
BU outhit Tennessee Tech, .429 to .-037, in set one.
Belmont's defense remained active and unified in set two. Distribution from junior Hannah Miranda (Covington, La.) led to balanced offensive production. A Myer solo block gave Belmont a 19-12 edge. After a TTU mini run, two kills from sophomore Scarlet Gable (Munford, Tenn.) helped the Bruins finish off set two, 25-17.
Belmont again forced the Golden Eagles into more attack errors than kills in set two.
The Bruins raced out to a 9-4 lead in set three behind freshman Regan Kennamer (Huntsville, Ala.), before TTU settled in. Audrey Lewis and Bruin errors enabled Tennessee Tech to seize a 19-17 lead. But behind strong play from Youngdahl and Myer, Belmont rallied and closed out the match.
"Another good OVC win for our team today," Belmont head coach Deane Webb said. "Scarlet, Jocelyn and Jen attacked effectively throughout the match, and our team defended at a high level."
"The third set wasn't the prettiest volleyball we've played all year, but we stayed mentally strong and earned the victory."
"We will be back at work Monday, knowing that we need to improve significantly to play against a very, very good SEMO team in our next match. From what I've seen on video so far, they are very athletic in the middle. We will need to serve aggressively and our middles to play at a high level on Friday if we are to earn the win."
The Bruins hit a very efficient .291 for the match, with only 14 attack errors on 110 swings.
Gable led the way with 11 kills and 10 digs.
11 Bruin service errors proved a bit concerning, but five players hit over .250.
Kelsey Gray led Tennessee Tech (2-16, 0-6 OVC) with eight kills.
Belmont (8-12, 4-2 OVC) returns to action Friday, Oct. 12 at SEMO.
