ANCHORAGE, Alaska - - Belmont University men's basketball is set to face host Alaska Anchorage in the opening game of the 2012 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
The Bruins had the honor and privilege of practicing Tuesday at Elmendorf Air Force Base. After practicing and interacting with several service members, Belmont posed for pictures at the exhibit of aircraft based at Elmendorf. In addition, Belmont witnessed several training runs of the most technologically advanced fighter jet in the world, the F-22 Raptor.
Belmont defeated defending NIT Champion Stanford, 70-62, Sunday night behind balanced scoring and strong defense. Junior J.J. Mann, who was an Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team selection in 2011, continues to provide consistent production for the Bruins. He had a
team-high eight rebounds at Stanford.
Meanwhile Alaska Anchorage, one of the most tradition-rich NCAA Division II programs, enters the tournament with a 4-0 record.
This is the first time Belmont will participate in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Belmont is the fourth program from the state of Tennessee to participate in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, joining Chattanooga (1992), Tennessee (1984, 2001), and Vanderbilt (1982, 1992).The Bruins won the EA Sports Maui Invitational Regional Round a year ago.
Tip-off is set for 10 p.m. AST Wednesday night (1 a.m. CT Thursday). The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network, which is available on the following cable/satellite providers in middle Tennessee:
