NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team won their second straight match as they defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) 6-1 in a match played indoors on Friday at the Westside Tennis Club in Nashville.
The Bruins got the first point of the match as they swept all three doubles matches. At number one, Nikki Maciel and Fabiana Mersan beat Angelica Sepulveda and Alena Gizdic 8-4, while at number two, Carolyn Caire and Sandra Kancheva defeated Tais Lacerda Bezerra and Anita Racz 8-2. Finally, at the third position, Catherine Holliday and Natalia Nunes beat Sandra Munoz Poletti and Antea Dedic 8-1.
In singles, Belmont continued their strong play as they posted wins in five of the six matches to clinch the 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs. Senior Catherine Holliday won in straight sets at number two over Alena Gizdic, while at number three senior Carolyn Caire swept past Anita Racz. In the number four match, senior Natalia Nunes beat Antea Dedic, while at number five, freshman Sandra Kancheva won in straight sets over Sandra Munoz Poletti. Belmont wrapped up the victory by winning at number six as junior Erika Marschall beat Tais Lacerda Bezerra.
"I liked how we performed today," said Mark Srouji, BU head coach. "We played well from the start and that is a key to winning matches. Our team has gained a lot of confidence in our last two matches and I hope we can maintain it for our match with North Alabama next weekend."
The women's tennis team (3-2) will be back in action on Saturday, February 23 as they host North Alabama at 3:30pm indoors at the Westside Athletic Club.
