NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University men's basketball returns to game action Tuesday night against Green Bay in first round of the 2014 Postseason NIT.
This marks Belmont's ninth postseason appearance in the 11 years. The Bruins made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Belmont made an NIT appearance in 2004 and a CollegeInsider.com (CIT) Tournament appearance in 2009.
Senior J.J. Mann (Smyrna, Ga.) has received numerous accolades this season, including OVC Player of the Year and Capital One First Team Academic All-America honors. Mann broke Belmont's NCAA era single-season scoring mark, with 604 points to date.
Belmont is 8-6 against 2013-14 postseason teams, but Green Bay arguably poses the sternest challenge of the season. The Phoenix boast Horizon League Player of the Year Keifer Sykes and NBA prospect 7-1 Alec Brown.
Moreover, Green Bay ranks 20th nationally in scoring margin, and is Top 35 nationally in field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense.
Senior Drew Windler is a native of South Milwaukee, Wis.
With Belmont's victory over Indiana State Nov. 14, head coach Rick Byrd passed legendary UCLA head coach John Wooden in career victories. Byrd ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I head coaches in career victories with 687.
This marks the first meeting between Belmont and Green Bay.
