NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont dropped game one of the series with Eastern Kentucky, 12-6, Friday night at Rose Park.
The Colonels struck first behind a sacrifice fly and a single in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
Behind a home run from Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.) and a two-run single from William Dodd, the Bruins took a 3-2 lead in the third.
The Colonels responded by scoring nine unanswered runs to take an 11-3 lead.
Two runs in the top half of the sixth allowed EKU to regain the lead. A bunt single from Luke Wurzelbacher plated the tying run and an RBI single from Taylor Blair put the Colonels ahead, 4-3.
A pair of bases loaded walks extended EKU's lead, 6-3. An RBI single from EKU's Kyle Nowlin added a run before a three-run home run from Bryan Soloman put the Colonels ahead 10-3. Wurzelbacher's solo homer made the score 11-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit his seventh home run of the season. The Colonels added another run in the top of the ninth to take a 12-4.
Belmont threatened in the bottom half of the ninth. With the bases loaded, Spencer Petett (Tompkinsville, Ky.) hit a two-run single to cut the lead to six, but EKU closer Cody Creamer got a pair of fly outs to end the game.
Belmont will continue the series with the Colonels tomorrow at 1:00pm.
