Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Belmont Women's Basketball (4-1) is off to their best start since 2009-10 with a dominating victory over Alabama A&M (0-4). Sophomore Sally McCabe (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) paced the Bruins to a 78-28 victory shooting a career-high 19 points, and went 9-for-12.
"This game was the beginning of us as a team giving the first punch," said sophomore Sierra Jones (Huntsville, Ala.). "We stuck to our game plan that Cam had for us and it showed by the end of the game! I am excited to see us grow!"
Rebounds was the name of the game Tuesday evening as the Bruins out rebounded the Bulldogs 41 to 15, snagging 16 offensive rebounds and 25 defensive.
Thompson, McCabe and freshman Jenny Roy (Brentwood, Tenn.) each completed the game with six rebounds.
Junior Lauren Thompson (Franklin, Tenn.) finished the evening with 14 total points followed by Jones with 10.
"It was nice to get our first road win under our belts before Thanksgiving break," said Head Coach Cameron Newbauer. "It was fun to watch a great group of young ladies continue to grow and develop."
Smith opened up the game scoring the first four points for Belmont. McCabe would blaze a trail for the Bruins as she finished the first quarter with 11 of the teams 19 points. Alabama A&M mixed in a few shots here and there but overall Belmont had control of the first quarter as they held A&M to a four minute drought at the end of the first quarter.
Belmont turned it up even more in the second quarter holding A&M to just six points. Belmont went on a 12 point run to start the second quarter. The Bulldogs were on a four-minute drought until they sunk two straight, which brought the score to 31-18. The Bruins went on a 16-2 run to close out the half.
In the second half Belmont held A&M to only eight points, four of which resulted from free throws.
The Bruins went on an 11-point, three minute, run in the middle of the third quarter with Thompson recording four. Freshman Ellie Harmeyer (Kenosha, Wisc.) hit two free throws with a minute left before the Bulldogs hit two as well in the last seconds of the quarter.
Junior Madison Blevins (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a three followed by a jumper inside putting up the first five points of the fourth quarter. The following four points came from free throws made by freshman Paris Lawson (Old Hickory, Tenn.). The Bulldogs hit only two free throws in the fourth quarter, and with a minute left to play senior Natalie Cohlmeyer (Evansville, Ind.) hit one last jumper for Belmont.
The Bruins return home to face Troy on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 4:00 p.m. CT. It is daughter's day at the Curb Event Center, so bring your princesses before the game for fun activities and join in on the princess fashion show at halftime.
"We are very excited to see all of the princesses out at the game on Sunday." said Newbauer.
