Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ky.-- Despite dissappointment from their first OVC game being cancelled, the Bruins returned on Sunday eager to play. The Bruins defeated the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 11-4 in game one and 8-3 in game two of the doubleheader. The Bruins are now 2-0 in OVC play and 8-8 on the season.
Starting on the mound in game one, and pitching a complete game was Senior Dan Ludwig (Naperville, Ill.). Ludwig struck out 6 batters while only walking one. He gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, on 12 hits.
Leading at the plate during game one was Senior Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) who went 4 for 5 at the plate with 4 RBI. Ferguson recorded 3 singles and a double.
Eastern Kentucky tacked two runs on the board to start an early lead by scoring a single run in the first and second inning. Drake Byrd (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) wente 2-4 at the plate and led off the Bruins hitting spree in the top of the 5th with a single up the middle. Dom Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt to advance Byrd. William Dodd (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) hit a single to right field and Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) followed with a double down the right field line to plate Byrd. The hits did not stop there, Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a single up the middle to plate to runners and Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) draws a double to right center plating Ferguson. The Bruins were able to score 4 runs off 5 hits in the top of the 5th.
The hot bats didn't stop in the 6th, the Bruins continued their lead scoring another 4 runs off 4 hits. Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.) led off the inning with a double off the right center wall. Drake Byrd laid down a bunt that turned into a single. Dom Veltri lays down a sacrifice bunt. Eastern Kentucky tries to make the play on Egli at the plate but in unsuccessful. Ferguson hits a 2 run double to plate a runner and is followed by a single by Beaty to plate another.
The Bruins were able to get two more runs across in the top of the 8th off singles from William Dodd, Drew Ferguson, and Tyler Fullerton(Murfreesboro, Tenn.).
In game two against EKU, starting on the mound for the Bruins was Freshman, Tyler Vaughn (Jonesboro, Ill.). Vaughn pitched 3.2 innings striking out 4 batters and only walking one. He gave up 3 runs, 2 earned. on 2 hits.
Leading at the plate in game two of the series was Senior, Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) Beaty went 3 for 4 at the plate. Beaty hit a HR, double, and single for his three hits of game two. Beaty hit two doubles for the day, his two doubles placed Beaty of the record board for Career doubles. He is now tied for 10th in career doubles.
The Bruins took the lead in game two in the top of the 3rd inning. Leading off for the Bruins was Brennan Washington (Murfressboro, Tenn.) who drew a lead off walk, only the second walk of the game for EKU. William Dodd stepped up to the plate and laid down a well placed bunt down the left side. Dodd almost beat the throw to first byt received the sacrifice as Washington advanced to second. Ferguson hit a 2 out single to the left side to plate the lead off batter. Senior, Matt Beaty hi a bomb over the right field wall to plate Ferguson. Bruins at this point led 3-0. Tyler Fullerton reached base off a dropped infield fly to the third baseman. Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.) hit a double, his third hit of the weekend, to left center to plate Fullerton. Walsh was plated due to a pass ball and a wild pitch. The Bruins led 5-0 after the third inning.
Keeping the lead alive, Beaty hit a single down the right side to start off the inning. Fullerton reached on a catchers interference and they were both plated by singles from Tyler Walsh and Desi Ammons (Hohenwald, Tenn.).
One more run is plated in the 6th with a Homerun from senior, Drew Ferguson.
Josh Tubbs (Camden, Tenn.) received the win on the mound for the Bruins, his first win of the season. Tubbs pitched 3.1 innings and struck out one batter. He allowed no runs on three hits.
The Bruins return to Rose Park on Tuesday March 17th to take on Middle Tennessee State University at 5PM.
