Offensive Struggles

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont baseball team fell short in the second game of the series against Kansas, falling 5-1 on Saturday at Rose Park.

Logan Bowen came up with four strikeouts in his fifth career start, but the Bruins only came up with three hits as a team.

"Tip of the cap to their pitching staff and the job that those guys did," head coach Dave Jarvis said. "I felt like offensively, we didn't show good strike zone discipline. We allowed them to expand the zone and have success with that on us. I thought that was a big reason for our lack of offensive production today. Credit goes to their pitchers for putting us in that situation."

Kansas quickly responded following a shutout defeat to the Bruins on Friday, with the Jayhawks coming up with a leadoff double in the top of the first inning and later scoring the game's first run off a single to right field. Following a shutout inning in the top of the second from Bowen, junior Logan Jarvis drew a leadoff walk a half-inning later.

Hitting the first home run of the season for the Bruins on Friday, sophomore Tommy Crider drove in Jarvis from first base with a deep double down the left field line to tie it up 1-1.

"(Tying the game) it tells you a lot about our character and a lot about our team chemistry and I think both of those things are pretty good," Jarvis said. "I have a good feeling about our team as far as senior and upperclassmen leadership. I feel like that contributes to good chemistry and that allows us to never be out of (a game)."

Three scoreless innings followed before Kansas broke the tie in the top of the sixth, with James Cosentino hitting a solo home run to left field to put the Jayhawks ahead 2-1. The Jayhawks kept their foot on the gas pedal two innings later, collecting a leadoff double that was followed by a hit by pitch and single to load the bases.

Kansas drew three bases loaded walks that allowed the Jayhawks to score three insurance runs, with Belmont being forced to only one hit in the final two innings.

"Defensively, I thought we played reasonably well," Jarvis said. "On the mound, we got some guys in from the bullpen where it didn't go their way today. I'm optimistic about what the future holds for them. I think we're going to be just fine in the bullpen."

Belmont looks to claim the series on Sunday, facing Kansas for the final game of the three-game set at 1 p.m. at Rose Park.
