OXFORD, Ohio - - Belmont University women's track and field returns to competition Saturday at the Redhawk Invitational hosted by Miami (OH) University.
The Bruins delivered outstanding performances at the Vanderbilt Invitational one week ago, registering five podiums including event victory in the javelin from sophomore Maddie Quinn (Bible Hill, Canada).
At present, the Belmont women rank Top 3 in the Ohio Valley Conference in 11 events, with Quinn, junior Jessica Mattsson (Tierp, Sweden), freshman Rebekah Stucker (Odessa, Mo.), senior Caroline Pruitt (Allen, Texas) and senior Adreanna Parlette (Nashville, Tenn.) holding top billing in their respective disciplines.
Parlette, whose long jump standard of 6.50m at the Joey Haines Invitational ranks ninth nationally, is also well-positioned in the OVC in the 100m hurdles and high jump.
"This is the first time we have attended the Redhawk Invitational at Miami of Ohio, and the fact that it is a one-day meet means people will be doing events back-to-back with not much time between them," Assistant Coach Joe Frye said. "The ladies have been performing well of late, really supporting each other and coming into their own, which is what you like to see at this point of the season. You have finals and graduation, then shift total focus into the stretch run of competition."
Belmont, currently 21st in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region poll, will face a collection of competition from the Atlantic 10 Conference, Mid-American Conference and Horizon League.
While weather is expected to play a factor, Frye anticipates strong performances with the conference meet approaching in three weeks time.
"At this point in the season, almost all the athletes should be ready to go to conference championships. A few are trying to tie some loose ends on the fitness side,' Frye added.
The Redhawk Invitational is slated to begin late morning Saturday from George L. Rider Track. No spectators will be allowed at the meet, per Miami (OH) officials.
