Another Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University baseball team won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against SEMO 4-1, but the Bruins lost the series after a 5-0 defeat in game two at Rose Park.

Sophomore Carson Shacklett, junior Logan Jarvis and freshman Brodey Heaton all recorded multi-hit games in game one while freshman Andy Bean picked up his fifth win on the mound to go with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched. With his fifth win of the season, Bean became the third Belmont pitcher in the last five seasons to record five or more wins in a season.

Game 1

A hit-by-pitch and a single put two runners on base early in the bottom of the first inning for Belmont, with Jarvis driving in the game's first run off a single up the middle. Heaton followed that up with an RBI single in the next at-bat while Crider hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Bruins an early 3-0 lead.

SEMO responded in the next half-inning, loading the bases and eventually scoring a run off a groundout to cut the deficit to two runs. The Redhawks looked to do more damage with two runners in scoring position later in the inning, but Bean forced a two-out groundout to himself to keep the Bruins in front.

Both teams forced five consecutive shutout innings before the Bruins added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Belmont got runners in scoring position with one out, setting up a sacrifice fly from junior Grayson Taylor to put Belmont in front 4-1.

Junior Kyle Brennan prevented any hopes of a comeback in the top of the ninth inning, collecting two strikeouts and forced a groundout to himself to give Belmont the win and earn his third save of the season. Brennan needs just two more saves to move into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time career saves list with Wilson Tucket (2001-04).

Game 2

After two shutout innings, SEMO drew to leadoff walks in the top of the third inning and eventually drew first blood. The Redhawks scored a pair of runs off a single and a fielder's choice to give them an early 2-0 lead.

Following a leadoff single in the top of the fourth inning, two doubles down the right field line allowed SEMO to double its lead 4-0. The Redhawks scored their fifth run of the game in the next at-bat, hitting an RBI single to left field.

SEMO's pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, only allowing six hits and shutting out the Bruins in the process.

Belmont (20-21, 12-12) goes on the road to face Murray State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The game will not be reflected in the Ohio Valley Conference standings and will be treated as a mid-week non-conference game.
