OXFORD, Miss. – Going up against All-Americans and professional throwers, senior Jessica Mattsson turned in the top hammer throw mark in Belmont University women's track and field history Friday afternoon at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, Mississippi. Her performance stood out as the Bruins' throwers kicked off Belmont's stay in the Magnolia State.
Mattsson, a native of Tierp, Sweden (Katedralskolan), launched a 202-3 (61.66m) on her third attempt to set the school record and shatter her own program best by over five feet. Competing in the hammer throw invitational, which represented the top nine seeds of the event, Mattsson well exceeded her previous record of 197 (60.05m). Heading into the weekend, only seven throwers in the NCAA East Region had surpassed 200 feet in the hammer throw this season.
"Jessica had a fantastic series today, including three school record-breaking throws, which tells me she has a very bright season ahead of her," said assistant coach Joe Frye. "The progress she's made since her freshman year is astounding, and she's sacrificed a lot for this sport. I'm so glad she is getting a chance to see her hard work pay off."
Sophomore Rebekah Stucker also competed in the hammer throw Friday where she finished in the top half of the non-invitational event, placing 12th among 26 throwers with a distance of 164 (50.00m) on her first attempt.
Belmont's field athletes and sprinters continue action at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex Saturday with field events getting underway at 11 a.m. Running events will get started in the afternoon beginning with the 100m hurdles at 2:20 p.m.
