NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Following a weekend off from meet action, the Belmont University women's track and field team returns to competition this weekend as the Bruins take on the Georgia Tech Invitational in the Peach State and freshman distance runner Kaitlyn Vanderkolk races in Virginia at the Virginia Challenge. A total of 21 Belmont student-athletes will contend for high marks across 17 different events in Atlanta at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility Friday and Saturday, while Vanderkolk races in the 5000m Friday night at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field in Charlottesville, Virginia.
"The team is really starting to come into a groove after some really good performances at Ole Miss two weeks ago and we're hoping to keep that going this weekend," said associate head coach Cameron Harvey. "Georgia Tech is usually a pretty competitive meet all around, so it'll be a great environment for our athletes to thrive in. This last stretch of the season – at Georgia Tech, Virginia and Vanderbilt – is definitely a key time for us as we start narrowing down who is going to compete at the OVC Championships."
The two-day Georgia Tech Invitational gets underway Friday at 12 p.m. CT with sophomore Rebekah Stucker and senior Jessica Mattsson competing in the hammer throw. The duo will be joined by sophomore Olivia Moyer for the shot put at 4:30 p.m. CT on the opening day of the meet with the pole vault, long jump and 100m hurdles taking place at the same time. Friday's events will also include the 100m dash, javelin, 1500m and 5000m.
Saturday's action will start at 11 a.m. CT with the discus and high jump, followed by the triple jump and 4x100m relays at noon. The 400m hurdles, 400m, 800m, 200m and 4x400m relays will wrap up the weekend.
The Bruins carry a lot of momentum into the weekend after a successful showing at Ole Miss' Joe Walker Invitational two week ago where senior Jeanette Morley captured gold in the high jump. Vanderkolk also had a strong race her last time out as she won her heat and clocked a personal-best 16:49.32 in the 5000m in Mississippi.
Belmont is making its second trip to Atlanta this year after beginning the outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational (March 18-19). At that meet, Stucker won the discus and set the school record with a throw of 161-8 (49.27m).
