NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Looking to further bolster its successful outdoor campaign, the Belmont University women's track and field team will close out the regular season this weekend at Vanderbilt University's Outdoor Music City Challenge. The nearby two-day meet held Friday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt Outdoor Track Complex will feature 18 teams in action as the Bruins make final preparations for the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference championships.
A total of 28 Belmont student-athletes will compete in 17 different events across the two days.
"Vanderbilt always puts together a quality meet and this will be no exception," said director of track and field and cross country Jeff Langdon. "With it being finals week, it is an added bonus to compete in Nashville. This will be a great opportunity for several athletes to prove themselves and gain confidence going into our championships."
The weekend's action will get underway Friday at noon with juniors Allison Gunderson and Maddie Quinn and senior Grace Maniscalco competing in the javelin. Friday afternoon's field events also include the long jump and discus, before the 200m, 1500m and 3000m steeplechase wrap up day one.
Senior Jessica Mattsson and sophomore Rebekah Stucker will kick off Saturday with the hammer throw at 9 a.m., followed by the pole vault, high jump, triple jump, 100m hurdles, shot put, 400m, 100m, 800m and 400m hurdles. The 4x400m relay at 4:50 p.m. Saturday will conclude the meet.
Last weekend, the Bruins tallied 16 personal records between the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Virginia Challenge led by Mattsson's win in the hammer throw in Georgia. Breaking her own school record, Mattsson landed a 203-7.7 (62.07m) to capture gold among 31 total throwers. Senior Morgan Louderback also notched a program record at the Georgia Tech Invitational, going for a personal-best 39-3.25 (11.97m) in the triple jump. The mark broke an 11-year old school record.
Freshman distance runner Kaitlyn Vanderkolk, the reigning OVC Freshman of the Week, had another outstanding race last weekend in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Going up against a very fast field last Friday night at the Virginia Challenge, Vanderkolk set a personal record at 16:40.83 in the 5000m.
Cost of admission to the Outdoor Music City Challenge is $5 at the gate with all children 10 and under gaining free admittance. Vanderbilt does have a clear bag policy that is strictly enforced and meet staff makes the final decision on any questionable items.
Free parking is available in the 25th Avenue Garage (2700 Children's Way, Nashville, TN, 37212) via the Highland Avenue entrance. On Friday before 5 p.m., spectators should park on floors 9-11 in non-reserved spaces. On Saturday, or after 5 p.m. on Friday, spectators may park in any non-reserved space after entering the garage from Highland Avenue.
