ST. LOUIS – After having one of the best collegiate debuts in the country last Monday at the University of Missouri, Belmont University women's basketball's
Jailyn Banks has been selected as Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week. The guard averaged 16 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists against two Southeastern Conference opponents in her first two games as a Bruin.
Â
A native of Spring Hill, Tennessee (Middle Tennessee Christian School), Banks scored 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out a pair of assists, made a block and came up with a steal on the road against the Tigers of Missouri. Connecting on two of her five three-point attempts, Banks' 23 points were the fourth-most by any true freshman this season making her debut.
Â
Helping Belmont to a dominant, 26-point win over Georgia Friday night in the Music City, Banks tallied nine points, distributed a game-high tying five assists, collected five boards and came up with another steal. Across the two games, Banks went 10-for-12 (.833) at the free-throw line.
Â
With Banks' effort Friday, the Bruins were able to secure their third victory over an SEC opponent in four seasons.
Â
Belmont's convincing 76-50 win over the visiting Lady Bulldogs began a three-game homestand. The Bruins welcome Wichita State to the Curb Event Center Wednesday night for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff. On Sunday, Belmont hosts nationally-ranked Mississippi State at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs are receiving 51 votes in this week's Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll.
