Jailyn Banks Repeats as MVC Freshman of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Two weeks into her collegiate career, Belmont University women's basketball standout guard Jailyn Banks has twice been named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week. On Tuesday afternoon, Banks was named MVC Freshman of the Week by the conference office for the second consecutive week to start the season.
 
Continuing her sensational start to her Bruin career, Banks had another outstanding pair of games last week as she helped lead Belmont to a gritty 75-67 victory over Wichita State Wednesday night inside the Curb Event Center. Scoring a game-high tying 17 points, the Spring Hill, Tennessee (Middle Tennessee Chirstian School), native grabbed six rebounds and distributed a game-high five assists. She went 6-for-12 from the field against the Shockers and was 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
 
On Sunday afternoon in the Bruins' nailbiter with Mississippi State, who is now in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25, Banks scored 13 points in the second half as she knocked down eight free throws. Belmont was barely edged 63-62 as a Banks jumper and Kilyn McGuff putback both rimmed off in the closing seconds.
 
For the week, Banks averaged 15 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and a steal. She has scored in double figures in three of her first four games.
 
The Bruins head to Las Vegas this week for the 2023 Ball Dawgs Classic, held at The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada. Belmont faces fourth-ranked and three-time national champion Stanford Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. PT. Top-15 ranked Florida State and Northwestern are also in the four-team tournament field. The Bruins' second game at the Ball Dawgs Classic will take place Friday. Both tournament games in Las Vegas will be broadcast on FloHoops.
