ST. LOUIS – For the third time this season, Belmont University women's basketball's
Jailyn Banks has been named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week. Announced by the conference office Monday afternoon, Banks scored a team-high 16 points last Wednesday in helping lead the Bruins to victory in the 77th Battle of the Boulevard versus nearby rival Lipscomb.
Â
Continuing her fabulous start to her collegiate career, Banks knocked down her lone three-point attempt and went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line against the visiting Bisons. The guard also dished out a trio of assists and grabbed a pair of boards in the convincing 70-51 home win.
Â
A native of Spring Hill, Tennessee (Middle Tennessee Christian School), Banks has scored in double figures in seven of her first nine games at Belmont. She is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per outing.
Â
Banks earned MVC Freshman of the Week honors the first two weeks of the season (Nov. 13 and Nov. 20). Last week, junior guard
Kilyn McGuff was tabbed MVC Player of the Week for her first career player of the week award.
Â
In the middle of an 11-day break from game action, the Bruins return to play this Sunday at Kennesaw State. Tipoff from the KSU Convocation Center in Kennesaw, Georgia, is slated for 1 p.m. CT. The non-conference road contest will be broadcast on
ESPN+.
Â
Belmont is riding a four-game winning streak.
