INDIANAPOLIS – For the third time this season, Belmont University men's tennis senior
Tomas Luis has been selected as Under Armour Horizon League Singles Player of the Week. Announced by the league office midday Wednesday, Luis became the Bruins' all-time winningest singles player this past Saturday.
Â
A native of Tavira, Portugal, Luis was also tabbed Horizon League Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 21 and Feb. 28 earlier this year.
Â
Earning his 74th career singles victory to surpass
Marko Ilic (2018-21, 2022-23) for the most singles wins in a Belmont career, Luis gave up only one game in a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Tennessee Tech's Murilo Burckhardt. His triumph at No. 2 singles last Saturday at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex helped lead the Bruins to a 4-3 win over the visiting Golden Eagles on senior day. With the senior day victory, Belmont secured its second consecutive Horizon League South Division championship and third-straight conference regular season title.
Â
Luis and the Bruins are the top seed in the South Division at this weekend's Horizon League Men's Tennis Championship held on the campus of Purdue University at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana. Belmont takes on the winner of Horizon League North Division No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky and South Division No. 3 seed Tennessee Tech in the first semifinal match Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET. The Horizon League Men's Tennis Championship title match is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET Sunday morning.
