Kendal Cheesman Selected as MVC Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS – After nearly averaging a double-double in leading the Belmont University women's basketball team to two road victories this past weekend, senior forward Kendal Cheesman has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. Announced by the conference office Monday afternoon, Cheesman collects her first MVC Player of the Week honor.
 
In wins at Valparaiso University Friday night and the University of Illinois Chicago Sunday afternoon, Cheesman averaged 17.5 points on 55.6 percent (15-of-27) shooting, 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists. She shot 40 percent from downtown and had a steal in both outings.
 
Registering her team-best fifth double-double of the season and 10th of her career, Cheesman scored 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting and snagged a game-high 11 rebounds Friday in the win over the Beacons. In the second quarter, Cheesman caught fire and scored 13 of the Bruins' 18 points by going 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-4 from deep.
 
The Tampa, Florida (H.B. Plant HS), native nearly posted another double-double during Sunday's triumph in the Windy City with 14 points and a game-high eight boards. Cheesman has scored in double figures in five-straight games, averaging 16.4 points on 60 percent shooting and 9.4 rebounds across her last five performances.
 
With Cheesman's outstanding play, Belmont completed its fifth consecutive undefeated week in the Valley and improved to 11-1 in MVC action. Having won 10 straight, the Bruins have put together a 10-game winning streak in eight of the last 10 seasons.
 
Belmont returns to the Curb Event Center this week, hosting Northern Iowa Thursday evening and welcoming Drake to the Music City Saturday afternoon. Tipoff with the Panthers Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Nashville. The game will be broadcast on the MVC TV Network, distributed on Gray Media and also available on ESPN+.
