NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont
baseball defeated Eastern Michigan 5-3 on Saturday afternoon to
become the first team in Belmont history to start 10-0. The Bruins
dropped game two of the doubleheader to lose the first game of the
season.
Freshman Chase Brookshire
(2-0) guided the Bruins to victory in game one after pitching 7 2/3
innings and striking out six.
Derek Hamblen went
4-for-4 at the plate and was the root of two key double plays on
the defensive side.
Game two was another one-run
game, but Belmont was on the losing side for the first time this
season.
Belmont scored three first
inning runs, but the Eagles scored four runs in the fifth inning to
take a decisive 7-4 lead. Belmont scored two runs in the bottom of
the ninth to make for a dramatic ending, but left two runners on
base
Junior Nate Woods had a
two-run double in the first inning to extend his season-long
hitting streak to 11.
Before opening the conference
season at Jacksonville next weekend, the Bruins host Middle
Tennessee State on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
