BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Belmont
pitched six straight scoreless innings but fell to No. 21 WKU 2-3
on Wednesday night in Nick Denes Field.
For the second straight game
Belmont allowed early runs as WKU scored two runs in the first and
one in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Josh Davis entered the
game in the second and pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings with just
three hits while striking out three.
The Bruin pitching staff held
the 21st-ranked Hilltoppers scoreless for the remainder of the game
as the Belmont offense put up a run in the fourth and eighth inning
to narrow the deficit to one.
Batting leadoff for the first
time this season junior Derek Hamblen
extended his career-long hitting streak to 18 games after going
1-for-5. Freshman Jared Breen had a
double for the second straight game, driving in the Bruins' second
run of the day in the eighth inning.
WKU relief pitcher Ross
Hammonds went 1 2/3 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. WKU
closer Rye Davis pitched the ninth and reached 96 mph en route to
striking out two for his seventh save of the season. Dane Swinehart
(1-3) started for the Bruins, allowing three runs and four walks in
the loss.
WKU (24-7) evens the season
series after the Bruins upset the then 23rd-ranked Hilltoppers on
March 3 at Shelby Park, 5-3. The all-time series is also now tied
at 16 games each.
Belmont (16-15) continues
nine-straight road games with a weekend non-conference series at
Arkansas-Little Rock beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
