Box Score COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball (36-17, 21-7) fell in game one, 8-5 to Tennessee Tech Thursday night.
With doubles from Jared Breen (Marietta, Ga.) and Drew Turner (Shelbyville, Tenn.) Belmont took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tennessee Tech responded in the bottom half with a solo home run from Zach Stephens, tying the game.
Breen hit a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the third to put the Bruins on top, 2-1. Turner drew a two-out walk and advanced on a single through the left side from Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.). Belmont continued to extend their lead to 3-1 behind an RBI single from Cookeville native, Judah Akers (Cookeville, Tenn.).
Behind a single from Daniel Miles, the Golden Eagles made it a one-run ball game in the fourth. TTU loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly tied the game before Michael Morris singled through the left side to give Tennessee Tech a 4-3 lead.
Josh Davis (Fayetteville, Ga.) led off the fifth with a single to center followed by a single from Turner. A wild pitch from TTU starter Tristan Archer advanced the runners before Beaty reached on an error, scoring Davis and tying the game. Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) laid down a perfect bunt to score Turner and put the Bruins on top, 5-4.
A grand slam from Miles in the bottom of the fifth, gave Tennessee Tech an 8-5 lead, that would hold.
Chase Brookshire (Chattanooga, Tenn.) made his third start back from an injury that left him sidelined for a little over a month. The left-hander pitched six innings and gave up six hits, and struck out seven. Brookshire is Belmont's career strikeout leader with 325 and the all-time leader in innings pitched with 351.
Belmont and Tennessee Tech will play game two of the series tomorrow night. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00p.m.
