Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Belmont's late rally fell short Friday night at Roy E. Lee Field, as the Bruins fell 3-2 to SIUE.
SIUE got on the board first in the fourth inning after a pair of singles and a BU error.
Tyler Walsh singled to left in the sixth for the first Belmont hit of the game. The Bruins had runners on the corners in the inning, but they were left stranded as SIUE maintained a 1-0 lead.
Behind a pair of Bruin miscues and an RBI single from Zach Little, SIUE extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom half of the sixth.
Walsh doubled down the left field line and Drew Ferguson singled through the left side in the eighth. Nick Egli got hit by a pitch after coming off the bench to load the bases. Matt Beaty's RBI single scored two and cut SIUE's lead to one, 3-2.
The Cougars threatened in the bottom half of the inning behind back-to-back singles, but Belmont got out of the jam.
Patrick McGrath went 7.2 innings on the mound. He struck out nine and did not allow a walk.
Belmont will conclude the series tomorrow with the first game of the doubleheader scheduled for 1:00pm.
