NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont's ninth inning rally fell short Friday afternoon as the Bruins fell to Austin Peay, 3-2.
Belmont struck first after a double from Matt Beaty who scored on an RBI single from Jamie Ritchie in the first. The Governors responded in the second scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
Austin Peay's PJ Torres hit a two-run homer in the seventh, the only hit allowed by James Buckelew, but it was enough to give the Governors a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Beaty and Ritchie drew back-to-back walks before William Dodd's sacrifice bunt moved the runners over. Nick Egli came off the bench and his sacrifice fly pushed Beaty across the plate to come within one. Austin Peay reliever Ryan Quick recorded a strikeout to end the inning and get his second save.
Belmont will conclude the series with Austin Peay tomorrow at 1:00pm.
