Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Belmont baseball team now (1-1) defeated the Toledo Rockets 18-5 this afternoon in a cold and windy game at Rose Park on Saturday. Senior captain Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) led at the plate going 3-6 with a triple, single and a grand slam recording 6 RBI's.
Starting on the mound for the Bruins was freshman newcomer
Tyler Vaughn (Jonesboro, Ill.). In his debut appearance, Vaughn pitched three up, three down. He struck out his first two batters faced. Vaughn was awarded his first collegiate win for the Bruins.
Although the cold weather was a factor, the bruins did not let the cold cool their bats. They took an early 2 run lead in the bottom of the first and did not look back. The Rockets fought back with a few runs but never gained a lead.
The Bruins scored 5 runs in both the 6
th and 8
th innings.
Tyler Fullerton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and
Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 2-3 at the plate. Fullerton recorded two doubles for the game with one RBI, Ferguson hit a single and a double scoring 4 Runs and batting in one RBI. Sophomore shortstop,
Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.) went 3-4 at the plate with three singles and 2 RBI.
Three more pitchers,
Aaron Quillen (Kingsport, Tenn),
Josh Tubbs (Camden, Tenn.) and
Connor Etheridge (Springfield, Ill.) made their debut on the mound for the Bruins. All three pitchers allowed no runs and struck out a total of three batters.
This is the first win for the Bruins in their 2015 campaign, bringing their record to 1-1 for the season.
The Bruins enter their next contest against defending National Champions, Vanderbilt on Wednesday February 18th. First Pitch is slated for a 4PM game start at Rose Park. The game will be featured on the OVC Digital Network and live stats will be provided on belmontbruins.com.
