Box Score MARTIN, Tenn.— Despite tying the game in the top of the ninth to stay alive, the Bruins handed the Skyhawks the series win on Saturday with a 5-4 loss in the tenth inning.
The Bruins jumped to a hot start in the game when Senior Alec Diamond stepped up to the plate with a leadoff single to right field. Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) draws a walk to place runners on first and second. The Hitting continued with a double to right field from Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) which plated Diamond. A sac fly plated Ferguson to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead on the Skyhawks.
Starting on the mound for the Bruins was Junior righty Aaron Quillen (Kingsport, Tenn.). Quillen entered the game with a 2.05 ERA. He pitched 8.0 innings and matched his career high of 11 strikeouts.
Tacking on another run in the top of the third, Ferguson led off with a double down the left field line and was later plated by a groundout, to take a three run lead on the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks fought back in the bottom of the third with a triple and two singles to tie the game at three apiece.
A solo homerun from Andrew Castillo in the bottom of the 5th gave the Skyhawks the one run lead over the Bruins. The Bruins were held to 5 scoreless innings after the third, but did not let that stop them.
Ferguson hit a double down the left field line that ricocheted off the third baseman's glove, the double plated a runner who reached by walk.
Matthew Kinney ( Alpharetta, Ga.) came to the mound in the ninth and held 2 runners on base to hold the Skyhawks scoreless and to propel the Bruins into extra innings at Skyhawk Field.
The Bruins were held scoreless in the top of the 10th. UT Martin led off with a double to left center and was plated by a walk off double to end the game.
The Bruins look to take a win from the Skyhawks as they return to Skyhawk Field tomorrow at 1PM in the last game of the series.
