Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- The Bruins returned home to Rose Park and continued their tremendous effort at the plate adding another five homeruns to the team total and plating 17 runs on 17 hits. The Bruins defeated the Lipscomb Bisons 17-2 on Tuesday and split the series with the Bisons 1-1.
Starting on the mound for the Bruins was Senior Patrick McGrath (Jackson, Tenn.). McGrath pitched a solid 7.0 innings for the Bruins. In McGrath's outing, he allowed only 1 run, in the top of the first, on five hits. McGrath struck out 5 and and held the Bisons to 6 scoreless innings after the first.
"Going in to the weekend, McGrath gave us a tremendous start to help stretch the lead and put up zeros on the board," said Coach Jarvis.
Sophomore Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.) started as the designated hitter and went 2-4 at the plate with two, two run home runs. This outing follows his two homerun outing on Sunday against UT Martin.
Senior Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 4 for 6 at the plate with 5 RBI. Ferguson hit a three run homerun in the bottom of the second to extend the Belmont Lead.
After the Bison's plated a single run in the top of the first, the Bruins stepped up to the plate with the same focus as Sunday. The Bruins produced early and plated three runs in the bottom of the first off two hits.
Bottom of the second, the Bruin bats came alive. Brennan Washington (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single to right field. Kyle Conger (Brentwood, Tenn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to advance Washington to second. With one out and runner on second, Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) stepped up to the plate for his second time and hit a single to center field. With runners on the corners and one out, Ferguson hit a three run home run. Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) after hitting a homerun on Sunday stepped up the plate and hit another home run. In case fans thought it stopped there, Tyler Fullerton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) followed with the Bruins third home run of the game. The Bruins extended their lead to 8-1 over the Bisons.
In the bottom of the fourth, Egli led off the with a solo home run over the right field fence to grow the lead.
Once again the Bruins returned to the plate in the fifth and scored three more runs off a single from Conger and back to back doubles from Ferguson and Beaty.
In the sixth Conger recorded his second hit of the game with a single up the middle. Diamond and Ferguson both followed with singles of their own and both Beaty and Fullerton reached on fielder's choices. With three runs plated, Egli stepped up to the plate and homered over the right field fence for his second two run homerun of the night. Bruins now led 17-1 heading into the 7th inning.
The Bruins allowed the Bisons to plate one run in the eighth inning but held the Bisons at a single run. Matthew Kinney (Alpharetta, Ga.) came to the mound in the 9th to close and retired all three batters faced.
Patrick McGrath received the win on the mound and he improves his record to 3-1.
The Bruins now 14-11 return to Rose Park on Thursday to host SIU Edwardsville in a three game conference series.
