NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Belmont Baseball split a double header today against Quinnipiac and Bradley. The Bruins faced Quinnipiac in game one and came out victorious with a 14-4 win over the Bobcats. In the second game against the Braves, Belmont couldn't find their footing with only 5 hits in the game.

In game one against Quinnipiac, starting on the mound was Aaron Quillen(Kingsport, Tenn). Quillen pitched 5 innings for the Bruins and was awarded the Win, he is now (2-1) for the year and struck out 6 batters and only allowed 3 runs, one earned, on 6 hits.

Leading at the plate for the Bruins was senior Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn). Beaty went 4 for 6 at the plate with three runs and 3 RBI.

Quinnipiac put a run on the board early in the top of the first so the Bruins fought back in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Beaty started off the the hits with a double to right center, Tyler Fullerton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) followed suit with a double to left center to plate Beaty. Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.) drew a walk and was plated by a double from Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.). The Bruins scored 3 runs in the first inning on three hits.

In the second, the Bruins returned to the plate ready to hit. William Dodd (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led of with a double to left field. Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) reached base on a hit by pitch and Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached first on an infield error which advanced Diamond. Matt Beaty in his second at bat drove a single to center field to plate Dodd. With the bases loaded Quinnipiac's pitchers walked in two straight runs. The Bruins scored four runs off two hits in the bottom of the second.

Two scoreless innings for the bruins brought a 4 run inning bottom of the 5th. William Dodd went two for four at the plate and hit a triple in the 5th to center field. Diamond drew a walk and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Drew Ferguson went 2 for five at the plate and hit a triple in the 5th down the right field line to plate both Dodd and Diamond. Ferguson then crossed the plate on a groundout by Beaty to second. Fullerton Reached second on an outfield error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was plated by an infield single from Walsh.

The Bruins were able to get 3 more runs across the plate in the bottom of the 8th to secure the lead with a single from Joe Stovall (Collierville, Tenn.), a double from Beaty and a home run from freshman Kyle Conger (Brentwood, Tenn.).

 

In the Bruins second tilt of the day against the Bradley Braves, the bats we saw in the first game did not return with as much power. The Bruins who showed 14 hits in the game against Quinnipiac came up short with only 5 hits in the second game.

On the mound for the Bruins in game two was senior lefty Dan Ludwig (Naperville, Ill.). Ludwig (0-1) pitched 7 innings for the Bruins and matched his career high of 12 strikeouts against 31 batters faced. Ludwig only gave up 2 walks and 3 runs on 9 hits.

Bradley tacked on one run early in the game in the top of the first with three singles to score a run. Belmont was able to respond with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1 with a solo homerun by junior Desi Ammons (Hohenwald, Tenn.).

The Braves plated to more runs in the 4th and held the Bruins to two scoreless innings before Ferguson hit a triple to center bottom of the 5th. Fullerton followed closely with a single to left field to score Ferguson. Beaty drew a walk, but the runners were left stranded.

The Braves held the Bruins scoreless through the final four innings to take the win 5-2.

 

After Saturday's double header, the Bruins are now 3-7 on the season. The Bruins return to Rose Park tomorrow for another double header against both Quinnipiac and Bradley. The Bruins play at approximately 2 and 5, similar to today's games.
