Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill.— After giving up a run to the Salukis in the first inning, the Bruins held them scoreless for eight while driving in 11 runs. The Bruins defeated the Salukis 11-1 on Tuesday and Swept the home and home series.
Starting on the mound for the Bruins was Dom Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.). Veltri pitched 5.0 innings and allowed only one run on six hits and struck out five.
The Bruins plated their first two runs in the second inning with a leadoff triple to center field from Tyler Fullerton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.). Nick Egli (Brentwood, Tenn.) followed with a shot high over the left field fence for a two run home run giving the Bruins a 2-1 lead over the Salukis.
From there the Bruins didn't look back. The Bruins tacked a single run on the board in the third and fourth inning.
Plating three runs in the fifth, Drew Ferguson (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Matt Beaty (Dresden, Tenn.) then stepped to the plate and singled through the left side. Egli once again delivered with a two run triple to center field to plate the first two runs. Egli was later plated off a sacrifice fly by Joe Stovall (Collierville, Tenn.).
The Bruins returned to the plate in the seventh and plated four runs. Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.) led off the inning with a double to left field. He was followed by a hit by pitch and a walk to load the bases. With bases loaded Kyle Conger (Brentwood, Tenn.) drew an RBI hit by pitch to walk in a run. With bases once again loaded, Alec Diamond (Kennesaw, Ga.) drew an RBI walk to plate another run. The Bruins plate two more runs off a sacrifice fly and an infield error to take the Bruins to their 11-1 lead.
Relieving Veltri on the mound was freshman Connor Etheridge (Springfield, Ill.). Etheridge struck out four of the 6 batters he faced in his two inning outing. Alex Ward (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) relieved Etheridge for an inning and struck out one of the three batters faced. Matthew Kinney (Alpharetta, Ga.) was brought in for the Bruins in the ninth inning to close the game and struck out the side.
Veltri received the win on the mound and improves his record to 2-2. The Bruins improve their overall record to 17-13 as they enter the weekend.
The Bruins head to Clarksville, Tenn. on Friday to take on OVC foe, Austin Peay, in a three game series starting on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM at Raymond C. Park in Clarksville, Tenn.
