Bruins Fall in Game Two

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Belmont University baseball team fell 7-3, in the second game of the series to the Youngstown State Penguins, Saturday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.

The Bruins (5-4) led 2-0 after four innings, but could not mount a comeback as Youngstown State rallied in the mid-to-late innings.

Brennan Washington (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) collected his team-high seventh multi-hit game as he finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Tyler Walsh (Evansville, Ind.) went deep for the second time this season in the hard-fought loss.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins opened the scoring with a two spot when Tyler Fullerton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), seeing his first action of the season, drove in BU's first run. Walsh followed Fullerton with a blast to left center which resulted in his second homerun of the year.

Freshman RHP Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) dropped the decision in his first career start. The righthanded newcomer pitched effectively through four innings, and held a lead. After working effectively through the Youngstown State order, he ran into some trouble in the fifth despite retiring the lead off batter. The Penguins scored three times off Queener (1-1) in the frame and their scoring was capped off by a three-run homer off the bat of Alex Larivee.

After YSU jumped ahead in the top of the fifth, the Bruins never could quite catch up. Belmont's biggest scoring threat came in the bottom of the seventh when it had runners on second and third with one out but came away with just one run.

Queener suffered the loss, but battled for Belmont, finishing with six innings pitched and five earned runs. Kyle Klotz (Fairview, Tenn.) came on in relief of Queener and logged 1/3 of inning before Josh Tubbs (Camden, Tenn.) subbed in and finished it for BU. Tubbs finished with 2.2 innings piutched and only allowed one hit.

The Bruins, for the second straight night, ran into some tough pitching. YSU's Jeremy Quinlan kept BU in check as he logged six innings of work and allowed just two runs. Quinlan finished with seven strikeouts before giving way to Jared Wight who notched the three inning save.

Belmont and Youngstown State meet tomorrow for the series rubber match. First pitch at E.S. Rose Park is slated for 1 p.m. The Bruins are 2-0 in Sunday action on the year.
