Saturday Setback

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Belmont dropped a 9-4 decision to Morehead State Saturday afternoon. The Bruins fell to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in OVC play.

Belmont would score the first run of the ballgame in the top of the third. Freshman Jordan Henshaw (New Market, Ala.) led off with a walk to become BU's first base runner. Junior Devon Gardner (Maryville, Tenn.) laid down a sacrifice bunt the next at-bat. The Eagles' pitcher sailed the throw at first over the first baseman's head which allowed Henshaw to advance to third and Gardner to make his way to second. Junior Zach Ehrhart (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) would then ground out to first, but scored Henshaw giving Belmont an early 1-0 lead. Belmont left one on base with the next Bruin flying out to center.

Morehead State wasted no time in regaining the lead. After a couple Eagles hits and a Belmont error, the Eagles scored one earned and one unearned run to take their first lead of the night at 2-1.

The Eagles tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead 4-1.

Belmont kept its composure and made things happen in the top of the fifth to tie it up. After back-to-back singles by Ehrhart and senior Cully Day (Mahomet, Ill.), senior Kyle Conger (Brentwood, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch and the Bruins loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore Matt Cogen (Franklin, Tenn.) would notch his 16th RBI of the season. After Belmont hit into a double play, senior Ben Kocher (Zionsville, Ind.) got in on the action with a RBI single of his own to tie the game at 4-4.

The Bruins built on their momentum and quickly retired the Eagles in order the bottom half of the inning, but struggled to get anything else going for the remainder of the afternoon,

Morehead took the lead once again in the bottom of the sixth after a couple base hits sent their fifth run across the plate and never looked back. The Eagles' put this one away in the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles rocketed three base hits and took advantage of a Belmont error to score four more runs to extend the lead 9-4.

The Eagles took down the Bruins in order the next three innings to secure the victory.

Senior Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) suffered his second loss of the season, but had a productive outing.  Queener struck out seven and only walked one on the afternoon.
