Bruins Swept By Braves

Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Baseball was swept by the Bradley Braves after the Bruins dropped a 7-2 decision Sunday afternoon.

Bradley made its presence known early on. With two outs and a runner on first, Dan Bolt hit a shot over the left field for his first homer of the year that scored two.

The Bruins struggled to get anything going and gave up a run each in both the fourth and fifth innings before putting together a big threat in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Cully Day (Mahomet, Ill.) picked up his third walk of the day to reach first. Senior Hunter Holland (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) followed that up with a base hit to left field to put runners on first and second. Day and Holland would complete a double steal to put two runners in scoring position. Junior Matt Cogen (Franklin, Tenn.)  walked in four pitches to load the bases. After a fielder's choice forced Day out at home, Bradley would get out of a jam with the next batter grounding out.

After giving up another run in the top of the sixth, Belmont scored its first run in the bottom of the inning.

After being hit by a pitch, lead-off hitter senior Austin Reynolds (Smyrna, Tenn.) became Belmont's first base runner of the inning. He would advance to second on a balk to get himself in scoring position. Freshman Kyle Brennan (Franklin, Tenn.) headed to the mound to try and get something going for the Bruins. Brennan recorded just his second collegiate hit with a line drive up the middle to record his first RBI as a Bruin. After the next two BU batters reached on walks to load the bases. After a Braves pitching change, sophomore Matt Cogen (Franklin, Tenn.) flied out to center field to end Belmont's scoring hopes.

After a couple base hits, the Braves would cross the plate for their sixth and seventh runs in the top of the seventh for their final runs of the afternoon.

Belmont scored its second run in the bottom of the ninth. After two early strikeouts, Cogen reached first base on a walk with Hadden on deck. Hadden rocketed a double to left field, driving Cogen in for an RBI to round out the game's scoring.

Junior Casey Queener (Brentwood, Tenn.) pitched five innings striking out six batters. Sophomores Jack Rettig (Mahomet, Ill.), Brandon Liskey (Harrisonburg, Va.), and Michael Matter (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and freshman Logan Bowen (Bowling Green, Ky.) all saw time on the mound for the Bruins.

Belmont will be back at E.S. Rose Park on Tuesday, March 6 to face the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
